I will sell via the web. Do I need certificates of authority for all states?

Full Question: I am contemplating selling via the web a line of goods. My promotional activity will be in the NY metro area and I anticipate that the majority of sales will come from the NY/NJ/CT area. I have a certificate of authority for sales in NY. Do i need to get a similar document for the additional states if the goods are shipped to residents in those states?

Diane Yetter photoIf your activities are limited to the state of NY, and you strictly market remotely and do not enter NJ or CT, your obligation to collect sales tax is currently limited to the state of NY. You would be required to collect tax on any sales delivered into NY that are taxable. If you start any promotional activities either your self or using third party individuals, this could create a registration and collection responsibility in other states.
