Diane Yetter photoThe determination of the tax is depending on whether you are selling doors and the customer will install themselves or if you are selling and installing the doors. In either state, if you are selling the door and the customer will do the installation themselves, then you are a retailer and you must collect sales tax on the selling price of the door. In both NC and SC, if you furnish and install the door, you are considered a contractor and you should not charge the customer sales tax. Rather, you owe sales tax on your purchase of the door (either by paying to the supplier or remitting use tax). This tax is considered part of your cost of goods and can be recovered from the customer as part of the cost of materials. However, you can not separately invoice the tax you paid on the materials.
