Diane Yetter photoIf you are not required to be registered in a state and do not have nexus in the state, you technically are not required to collect exemption certificates from your customers claiming an exemption. However, it is highly recommended that you do collect them in case a state determines that you did have nexus at the time of the sale. Without the exemption documentation, the seller can be held liable for any uncollected tax.
